Happy Mother's Day! Greetings from First Grade

First graders made Kid Pix cards for their mom’s in Kid Pix. http://www.mackeiv.com  What a special day for kids and their moms!

Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days in different countries.  Link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother’s_Day_(U.S.) to read more details about each of the dates.

What is your favorite children’s book about kids and parents?  Seven Silly Eaters by Mary Ann Hoberman is one of my favorites. It’s a funny story about a mom and dad who have 7 very picky eaters.

Recess!

Dr. Curt Hinson

When I ask students what their favorite subject in school is, undoubtedly many will respond ‘recess!’  Recess is a time when students can play games, socialize and get exercise.  Why then, is recess also a time when school conflicts begin?  Dr. Curt Hinson, author of Trouble-free Playground, presented a faculty workshop and student demo to look at why this is happeninig and games that children can play to help them structure this time with others.

Curt is an excellent speaker.  The children loved the games and the teachers appreciated how all of the students were engaged.  I  recommend Dr. Hinson’s workshop if you are looking for ways to promote a trouble-free playground and have fun!

Here’s a link to a wonderful website where you can see the drawings and hear the fifth graders in Sendai, Japan thanking the rest of the world for all of their assistance in March and April 2011 after the earthquake and tsunami.  The children, under direction of their excellent teacher, Sakari Sensei,  learned the English pronunciation from a voice recording of a fifth grader student from my school. I think that they did well!

We arrived near Johnny Kelly’s statue not far from Mile 17 early enough to catch the wheelchair and elite runners whiz by. http://www.bostonmarathon.com/ I didn’t know that Wesley Korir would be the winner, but I was drawn to him by his focus.
