Sixth Graders,

As Skipper Rich Wilson heads down toward Antarctica, I would like you to spend some time exploring the Southern Ocean and continent. Please click on the following links to answer the following questions:

1.) Where is Rich’s current location? (latitude and longitude)

http://vg.sitesalive.com/daily-updates/ships-position/

2.) http://vg.sitesalive.com/daily-updates/daily-podcast-from-sea/

Which direction is Rich sailing in now? N, S, SE, NW?

How does he describe the weather in this podcast?

What animal did he see?

What sailor had to abandon the race recently? Why?

What repairs did he make?

He mentions the ice gate. Click on this link to see what the ice gates are. Where are they located?

Has Rich passed the ice gate? http://www.vendeeglobe.org/en/newswire/6732/rich-passes-the-ice-gate.html

3.) As Rich heads to the Southern Ocean, Antarctica will be on his starboard. Click this link to see where the starboard is on the boat.

4.) In this post, Rich speaks about the oceans that he has traveled in.

What is the percentage of our earth that is ocean?

What can people do to prevent the oceans from becoming polluted?

5.) Jean Pennycook is in Antarctica researching the effects of climate change on adelie penguins.

Read this post to find out ways that she is connecting with children while she is in Antarctica. List three of the projects that she does with children.

6.) Click on this webisode to find out more about her work with penguins.

Describe Blondie. Who is he? What makes him different? What happens to his feathers as the season progresses? Has he ever had a mate? Why does the scientist think that he has never had a mate? What is Blondie showing us?

Who does Blondie find when he was out for a stroll?

Are there any all black penguins? In all animals the genes sometimes do random things, where the genes are combined in some unusual way. What is the term that the scientist uses for this?
