Rich Wilson Speaks with Fifth Graders

As Rich Wilson prepares for the November 2016 Vendee Globe, I have been looking through photos and articles from previous voyages. In this series of photos from a few years ago, Rich is retelling some of his experiences with the Vendee Globe 2008. A Book Talk

Rich Wilson speaking to a group at the New England Aquarium about his book, ‘France to France, Leave Antarctica to the Starboard.’

Rich describes his arrival back to Les Sables-d’Olonne after his voyage around the world.

I went to see Rich Wilson give a talk about his book ‘France to France, Leave Antarctica to the Starboard’ at the New England Aquarium. At the end of the amazing talk he shared news of the GA4 and the possibility of Vendee Globe 2016. Wow…

The Roseway

World Ocean School’s Roseway program is one of the most amazing field trips in the Boston area. Last Friday, fifth graders started their day out with shouts of ‘I’m a star!’ to warm up to the challenges of a human knot. Frustration in challenging problem solving was followed by cheering and applause as the children discovered communication and cooperation really are the keys to solving problems.

Once on board, the Roseway crew demonstrated the importance of teamwork as they shouted commands to each other to move away from the dock. Students watched with curiousity. It wasn’t long before they too were demonstrating their cooperative efforts as they raised the sails and were underway. Classes in knot tying, chart reading, coiling ropes, and Boston history followed under the beautiful sea breezes and gentle waves.

The three hours on the Boston Harbor went by very quickly and as we pulled into the dock, I could hear the students agree that they were glad that they had the chance to be a part of the crew. What a great tie-in to our decade of working with sailors, including our ‘teacher at sea,’ Skipper Rich Wilson, who was speaking about his book highlighting the transoceanic voyages that he completed as students across the world followed him via his sitesALIVE! website.

Thanks to the World Ocean Schools enthusiastic efforts to excite and engage the students.

Rich Wilson: ‘Never Give Up!’

Skipper Rich Wilson retells the story of the Vendee Globe to Jackson School students.

When was the first race?  What continents did you pass by?  How many races have you done?  When did you start sailing?  What age were you when you went on your first boat?  How many years have you been sailing?  What do you like best about your voyages? Did you ever get scared?

These were a few of the many questions that the students were wondering about before our teacher at sea, Skipper Rich Wilson http://www.sitesalive.com came to visit us on Friday. He retold his amazing story of his epic race around the world Vendee Globe race in the 2008-09  to students in fourth, fifth and sixth grade.  Students sat completely focused for 30 minutes as he shared videoclips of his view from the cockpit as he sailed around Cape Horn, across the Southern Ocean, and South Atlantic, incredible weather maps, broken masts, and proud moments at the finish line. He tied in math, geography, oceanography, weather, navigation, history, music, health, fitness, and sailing into his presentation.  Students followed up with many questions that he enthusiastically answered.   Rich is an unpretentious, incredible educator.  We are grateful for the opportunity to share his voyage experiences with him.

Webcasts with Skipper Rich Wilson

Since 2001 my students have followed the voyages of Skipper Rich Wilson. During this time I have shared the information about the voyage program with teachers around the world. In the summer of 2007 I had the chance to introduce Rich to some of the teachers who had followed his voyages or who I have met through connecting with his voyages.
