Rich Wilson Speaks with Fifth Graders

As Rich Wilson prepares for the November 2016 Vendee Globe, I have been looking through photos and articles from previous voyages. In this series of photos from a few years ago, Rich is retelling some of his experiences with the Vendee Globe 2008. Remembering the Vendee Globe 2008

Has it really been almost 4 years since the start of the Vendee Globe 2008? I remember sitting on my couch and texting away to my friends in other parts of the world as we watched a livestream of the sailboats parading to the start of the Vendée Globe race in Les Sables d’Olonne
I remember how nervous I felt as I watched the Great American III sail by as Rich Wilson, the only US sailor to compete in the VG 2008 race, waved to the supporters who were there to cheer the sailors on. I had followed 3 other successful races and looked forward to this one, but this was much longer and I knew it was going to be incredibly challenging!
Several times throughout the race, I put short entries here on this blog, recapping some of my memories and activities that I involved students with. I’m glad that I saved this, since I’ve forgotten some of those details.
On Friday I was excited to see the post announcing that Rich Wilson’s new book, about his experience in the VG 2008, is ready to order. And in a quick glance, I am very happy that he dedicated the book to his mother. Mrs. Wilson followed this race from the start to the finish. She would be honored. I ordered my copy of the book today and look forward to reading it.
Congratulations Rich! Thank you for archiving an incredible chapter in US sailing history. Race France to France: Leave Antarctica to the Starboard
